The plunger that slides down inside the carb body, operated by the choke lever

This part is brass and wear out over the years causing difficulty in starting. The spring can also compress over time and cause the plunger not to seat correctly, again causing irregular starting.

Best way to tell if the plunger is worn is if it looks all shiney and new, it should have a fairly dull matt finish. If it is shiney replace it.
